I love animating and experimenting with footage, creating expressive visuals with a mix of cutting edge, traditional and DIY techniques; including stop-motion, back-lighting and digital montage.

My interest in animation and experimental film making started at art school, hacking video tapes, maniplulating super 8 film, and bouncing light from projectors into abstract collages.  The analogue effects I learned and honed during my studies offer a really unique, exciting visual language which can stand on its own, or be used to enrich video projects.

Music Videos

This is a format I really enjoy working in, whether starting from scratch to create an animated visual story for a track, or building on an existing idea. Music videos I've made have had TV debuts, hundreds of thousands of views online, and screenings across the UK and Europe. I often collaborate with illustrators, and I've been lucky to work with some fantastic people over the years.

Concert Visuals / backing animation

Music is often inherently abstract, and as such, fluid, unusual, beautiful visuals are a perfect accompaniment. I've created set-long visuals from collaging analogue material with lo-fi digital footage and paper animation, into dreamlike, rhythmical sequences which captivate audiences.

'Matt’s animations are beautiful, textural pieces that draw you in. The films combine a low-fi mixed-media aesthetic with dreamy pacing, creating haunting and melancholy effects.'

'I first started working with Matthew Robinson with my old band Wooden Arms, when we commissioned him to create a series of visual elements to accompany our live set. He delicately balanced the dynamic of our music with moving image and was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. Great communicator and always willing to go the extra mile to ensure the project was the best it could be. I would highly recommend Matthew for any visual led endeavour as his keen eye and quick mind would be an asset on any project.'
